As the moon wanes towards new, Shivaratri is a time when we can celebrate the union of all the pairs of opposites.
It represents enlightenment in absolute darkness, the evolution of creation, in empty space.
It signifies the passing of the entire universe and all worldly attachments, into the unconscious state.
This is the end of all directions into which the mind, the sun, moon and stars have all disappeared.
Here all things can rest in the state of emptiness which is also a kind of fullness.
Sometimes this state of consciousness is called Shiva or Shankara.
It is a state out of which a great bliss and happiness may arise.
Shivaratri is a celebration of the balance that comes out of moving from immersion in darkness, to the light.
It is a time in which even the worldly representations of the Universal Consciousness can experience our most illuminated state.
The practices of yoga and meditation help build the strength and flexibility that our bodies and minds to receive the divine nectar of consciousness even in while in the physical form.
